Overview
Mayans were a group of people that live in the central America they settled in what is now called northern Guatemala and some of Belize. The earliest settlement was around 1800 B.C., which was called Pre-classic time. During the middle Pre-classic period lasted until around 300 B.C. They were extremely religious. They were so religious that they would build massive temples and would sacrifice enemy warriors on top of it to show their gods that they trust them. The Maya used a variety of methods to make their beautiful buildings. They almost always elevated temples and palaces by building them on top of pyramids, platforms, and acropolises. Buildings were adorned with sculptures and huge masks. Although, the insides of buildings were very plain. The Maya worshiped nature gods, (god of sun, rain, and corn) the importance of astronomy and astrology, rituals of human sacrifice, and the building of pyramid temples. Their religion was called Roman Catholicism. They were called the Mayans because of the area in which they lived. Maya means here is dreams, which means that they had dreams of what this place could be. Many people say the Mayan were important. They were important because they made and discovered many things we use today in modern life. The things they made were an advanced system of writing, mathematics and astronomy, which they used as a calendar. They are remembered for their remarkable advances in arts, science, and religion. The Mayans were a strong country until the Spanish came. Their language was Yucatan, spoken in northern Guatemala, and Belize. They had a hierarchical government ruled by kings and priest. Mayan social classes were social organized. It was divided in kings, nobles, priests, merchants and artisans, peasants and slaves. The soil was extremely rocky. The Yucatan area only got around 36 inches of rain a year. They planted seeds with shallow holes dug by sticks. Corn was usually planted but sometimes squash. The ancient Maya planted pumpkins, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, chili peppers, tomatoes, avocados, breadfruit, papaya, cotton, tobacco, vanilla, cacao, and a variety of wild fruits. The Maya domesticated turkeys, bees, ducks, and dogs. A hairless dog was most prized for eating, but when the Spaniards introduced cattle, pigs, and sheep the Mayans stopped eating dog.
